Summary:
So
how much was folk rock a part of 2013?
Consider that Mumford &
Sons “Babel”
not only topped our local sales chart, but bested the number two album
by a two-to-one margin!
Other similarly influenced bands like,
Blackberry Smoke, The Lumineers,
Jack Johnson and Regional folk-rock superstars,
Donna The Buffalo also
placed…although in the case of DTB, they were so close to actually
making the list, that due to their regional and local importance, I
added one more place to this years list to show how well they did.
The Blues are
also well represented with showings again by
Joe Bonamassa (who is again this year represented no less than three
times on our year end chart…with a live solo album at number two…a
collaboration with Beth Hart
at number seven…and as part of
Black Country Communion at #15.—It’s the third year-in-a-row he’s
had at least two albums on our year-end list!), plus
Gov’t Mule at number six, but
the most obvious genre represented on this years list is Classic Rock.
No less than six artists are represented in this genre…Jimi
Hendrix, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin
and The Beatles.
Surprisingly,
Modern Rock/ Alternative bands also did well.
Since the audience for these bands tend to download songs and
albums, rather than buy physical copies from local music stores, where
we gather our information, we were please to find that inspite of this,
Avenged Sevenfold, Pearl Jam, The Lumineers, Daft Punk and Five Finger
Death Punch all placed on our year-end chart.
You can also include folk-rockers,
Mumford & Son and
Jack Johnson in that genre,
as the folk-rock revival has been spearheaded by Modern Rock/
Alternative radio.
The most
shocking absence from our chart, hip hop, a genre which still sells the
most physical copies of any other, except country, which we don’t survey
stores for. Sorry, it’s just
not our specialty.

(ok, I know it’s over a
year old, but it’s new to me, I still haven’t heard the new lo-fi
resistance and every song on this disc is excellent!
They call their style power-twang, which is just a fancy way of
saying that they’re a synthesis of molly hatchet and the eagles…except
their harmonies aren’t quite as tight as the eagles…good, but not over
produced.)
Best Pop Song:
Minute You’re Gone-Zarni de Wet
(after experimenting
with jazz and broadway styled music, zarni has grabbed pop music by the
throat on her new ep and produced a song that could easily top the pop
chart…if only someone could get some exposure for it.)
Best Rock Song:

(hard to go wrong with
any randy mcstine project.)
Best Modern Rock Song:

(this anti-fracking
